THE LATE MR. POWDRELL.

MEMORIAL SERVICE. At St. Mary’s Church, Hawera, on Sunday night a special service was held as a memorial to the late Mr. Powdrelll. The vicar (Rev. R. Franklin) took for his text Ist Corinthians, xiii : “For now we see through a glass darkly, but then face to face.” He preached a very inspiring sermon, full of hope for those who have lost their loved ones and urging faith in the goodness of God. He referred to the -faithful Christian character of Mr. Powdrell and eugolised his work done for the church and school ; done all without ostentation, and done as so much had been done in his life, for the good of others. Unselfishness, concluded the speaker, was the keynote of a Christian, and this, he said, aptly described the life of the friend they all mourned. He lived for others, and helped all he could those in need, out of kindness and goodness of heart. His was a splendid example, the speaker added, pne that all should -follow. In the name of the people of St. Mary’s he expressed to the family and relations the heartfelt sympathy of all, and prayed that they would be helped and comforted in their time of sorrow by the teachings of the Christian faith. It is a remarkable tribute to the late Mr W D. Powdrell that at the funeral on Saturday there were representatives from every local body on the whole coast form Wanganui to New Plymouth. Practically all the Kaupokonui suppliers were also present. It was one of the largest funerals ever seen in Hawera, the cortege being almost a mile long.— Star.
