A SERIOUS CHARGE. By Tilsgraph.—Press Association. Blenheim, Last Night. Arthur James Bailey, charged with the crime of incest, came before the magistrate to-day. He pleaded not guilty and reserved his defence, and was committed for trial. DRUIDS LODGE. Auckland, Last Night. At the half-yearly meeting of delegates to the North Island Grand Lodge of Druids, it -was decided to establish a benevolent fund for the purpose of granting additional relief to members in distressed circumstances. LAUNCH TAKES FIRE. -/ Auckland, March 15.
The captain of the scow Wanderer, seeing a flare inside of Kawau Island, found three men clinging to a launch, burnt to th 6 water’s edge. The men had already been an hour in the water, and the launch sank five minhtes after they were saved. They were from Matakana and bound on a fishing expedition. The weather Was fine and the sea calm when the launch was suddenly enveloped in flames, apparently from the engine-room. The occupants jumped overboard and remained in the water until help arrived, CLAIM FOR DAMAGES ABANDONED. Te Kuiti, March 15. Notice of discontinuance has been served on defendants in the case in which Peter Mora, clerk of Waitomo Countv, claimed £4900 damages from the proprietor of the King Country Chronicle, J. E. Hammil, for a leader commenting regarding Qie purchase by Mora of a county farin. The withdrawal of the action by plaintiff is unconditional. W.C.T.U. RESOLUTIONS. Ashburton, March 15. At the W.C.T.U. Dominion Convention the following resolutions were passed: Asking that separate lavatory accomodation for women and children be provided on trainp. That steps be taken against the practice of consuming intoxicating liquor on trains. That i allegedly inadequate sentences were imposed upon men convicted of criminal assaults upon young children and asking for an enlargement of the powers of the picture film censor, and improvement of picture films. Improved legislation dealing with child labor and the establishment of continuation classes for young children who leave school after taking the primary course. Advocating that the father*, of a child born out of wedlock be held equally responsible with the mother for the welfare of the child; asking for the appointment of women on the anti-profiteering boards and public health board.
