WHY GERMANY LOST.

MARSHAL FOGH’S COMMENTS. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Paris, March 14. Marshal Foch contributes an article to the new journal, the, Revue de France, explaining the German defeat. He draws a parallell between the German armies in 1916 and 1814. Blucher, York, and Kleist inspired a holy passion, but Ludendorff was an excellent staff officer and nothing more. He lacked the true comprehension of the character of a national war, whereas the Allies were inspired by the loftiest spirit of sacrifice, their confidence and sacred ardor making the struggle a real national war and providing the principal cause of victory. What availed Ludendorff’s professional qualities against this spirit? He and his brother officers were excellent troop-directing machines, but lacked the internal flame and had no ideals, only vulgar material-ism.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
