BOROUGH COUNCIL
GENERAL PURPOSES COMMITTEE. The New Plymouth Borough Council met last night. Present: The Mayor (Mr F. E. Wilson), v Crs. W. F. Short, R. L. Parkin, J. Kibby, A. E. Sykes, and V. Griffiths. Twenty-eight ratepayers presented a petition directing attention “to the disgraceful state of I-each Street.” They pointed out that the street was overgrown with fennell, and that the watertables needed immediate attention. The petitioners are to be informed that the council hope to have the matter attended to shortly. In reply to a letter from the committee in charge of the East End Reserve It was decided that the borough subsidy for t.he current year be paid over, but the committee are to be informed that, in view of the heavy expenditure at the East End, it is possible the subsidy may not be Continued. Messrs. Burgess, Fraser and O Co., Ltd., were refused permission to hose the roads adjoining their premises at hours during the day later than permitted by the by-laws. The New Plymouth Astronomical society wrote requesting that “in view of the good work the society is doing, both educationally, and in adding to the attractiveness of New Plymouth, an annual subsidy may be provided by the Borough Council, or such other assistance given as it deems most siiitable.” It was decided that the society, be informed the council could not see its way la iaaMasa th« auabu of aubsidiss.
