SOUTH AFRICA.

THE ASIATIC MENACE. RESULT OF INQUIRY. ■ . U By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Capetown, March 12. ‘ The Government Asiatic Inquiry Commission regards the so-called Asiatic {menace as exaggerated and states it is {inconceivable that a few thousand Asiatics in the Transvaal should ever swamp jthe European population. The Commission ig unable to support the policy of repression, and declares {that general compulsory segregation would result in helotry, degrading to the Asiatics and reacting on the Europeans. Compulsory repatriation is out of the question, but the Commission strongly favours an arrangement for voluntary repatriation, also for voluntary segregation under the municipalities. It recommends the continuance of the Transvaal law forbidding Asiatics to acquire land, except under certain restrictions, also uniform licensing laws empowering frxnmieipalities to refuse licenses without giving a reason, subject to an appeal to y special board. There should be no relaxation of the immigration laws, and the Government’s Asiatic policy should be administered by one official.—Aus.* F.Z. Gable Assn.
