FRAUD IN MAYFAIR.
“AN AUSTRALIAN MILLIONAIRE.” ROBBED MEN AT BANKER. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received March 13, 5.5 p.m. London March 11. Robert Macdonald (53) and James Ford (23), who have been convicted in Australia, were sentenced at the Old Bailey to two years’ hard labor. They lured men to a luxurious flat in Mayfair, rented by a Captain Biggar, who is said to be an Australian millionaire. and there men ,were fleeced, often of £2OO or £3OO nightly playing banker, though the united bank balance of the cardsharpers was only £lO. Biggar, who was an Australian trooper, with an artificial leg, was assisted by a pretty young wife. Biggar was charged with the others, but he absconded from bail. Ford claimed to be an Australian banker with £3OOO a year. Detectives, after the verdict, stated that Ford recently obtained £lOOO from a man through a confidence trick. Ford and Macdonald were on the verge of collapse when they were sentenced to hard labor.—Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assn.
