THE LATE MR. POWDRELL.
EVIDENCE AT THE INQUEST. B> Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, March 11. The inquest concerning the death of Walter Dutton Powdrell, M.P., at the Bowen Street Private Hospital was held to-day. Evidence showed that deceased had had a nervous breakdown and required constant supervision owing to ths state of his nerves caused by worry and insomnia. He was not a mental case. The morning of his death deceased told the nurse he had had a bad night. He was very restless, and left his room shortly after 7 o’clock and was immediately followed by the nurse who found him lying on the asphalt footpath near the side of the hospital. He was unconscious and bleeding from the hands. Medical evidence showed that the cause of death, was injury to the spinal cord.
The coroner’s verdict was that death was due to injuries to the spinal cord caused by a fall from a bank at the back of the hospital. 'Whether death was by accident or design there was no evidence.
