IMMIGRANTS FOR AUSTRALIA. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Melbourne, March 11. Mr. Hughe© ha’s announced the new shipping rates and joint immigration scheme. The Commonwealth will contribute £l2 for each immigrant and a corresponding rilte for each child. The shipping companies will also be expected to make a reduction on the minimum fare, which at present is £4O. The rates apply only to such British people as are not eligible for the free passages given by the British Oversea Committee, but this year the aim will be to confine activities to ex-service men and women and children, of whom Mr. Millen has assured the Government great numbers are farm workers and domestics. —Aus. and N.Z. A plumber, inspecting a jambed water pipe oh the steamer Riverina, discovered a quantity of phosphorus' which caused an outbreak of flame and smoke. Detectives ar© not convinced of malicious intent. Commodore Hardy, acting first member of the Naval Board, stated that work had been discontinued at Cockatoo Island because the money allotted was exhausted. THE AMATEUR DEFINITION. Sydney, March 11. The Amateur Sporting Federation by 11 votes to 5 carried a motion opposing the clause in the amateur definition permitting professionals holding office on amateur bodies. Further consideration of the definition was postponed for seven weeks.
