THE COST OF LIVING
FOOD PRICES AND RENT. INTERESTING COMPARISONS A perusal of the figures for the December quarter shows New Plymouth to be the cheapest town in New Zealand of the 25 listed for groceries. One pound spent here is equal to 21s 8d in Welling- , ton. New Plymouth is the only Taranaki town for which figures are given, but the rates ruling throughout the province are very similar. In dairy produce New Plymouth is not so fortunately situated, being twelfth on the list. In meat, only four of the towns are dearer—namely, Nelson, Gpre, Alexandra and Ashburton —and a pound’s worth of meat at Dannevirke (the cheapest town) would cost 24s lid here. These figures, however, were compiled before the recent reduction in the price of meat. There are only four towns—-Hamilton, Wanganui, Auckland and Wellington—showing higher rentals than New Plymouth, and of these Wellington is only about 10 per cent, higher, and is easily the dearest in New Zealand. The New Plymouth rents are apparently on a pur with Auckland.
