STRATFORD.

STBATFOBD AGENCY. Advertisements and items of news for publication in the Taranaki Daily News should be left at the office of our local representatives, Wilson Bros., Broadway, Stratford: Orders for pa'pers may also be left with Marell 10. The requisition for a poll on the halflioliday question, which is now in circulation in Stratford, is meeting with a favorable reception and a large number of signatures have been obtained. Most people, while believing that a poll is now unnecessary owing to Saturday having been adopted, arc quite agreeable to the proposal that a poll should be held when it is explained to them that the object is simply to place Stratford on the same footing as other towns which are compelled to hold a poll. The change in ’the half-holiday appears to be working quite satisfactorily this week. Tuesday was a good business day and the business people are now endeavoring to make Friday a popular day with the country people. With the object of popularising Friday as the market day, the retailers are considering proposals for offering special bargains to shoppers on that day, which will not be offered on other days; Victoria bridge, which crosses the Patea river in Broadway, is now being entirely re-decked, experience having shown that the methods adopted in the past of making piecemeal repairs has not been successful. Several cases under the new borough will be heard at the Stratford Magistrate’s Court to-morrow (Friday) .The Customs Department has notified the Stratford Hospital Board that the X-ray plant which recently arrived would be admitted free of duty, excepting primage duty. A very successful social and dance was held in the Pembroke Road School last night in aid of tbe piano fund. Mrs. Bianchi supplied the music, and extras were played by Miss O.
