ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.

MOTOR ACCIDENTS. Allan Cressey, aged 18, employed by Messrs. Jones and Peters, Hawera, met with an accident on Tuesday afternoon, as a result of which his collarbone was broken. He was riding behind another man and got off, and in endeavoring to regain his seat on the carrier when restarting Cressey was caught by‘ the end of the machine, which apparently started with a sudden movement, and was thrown heavily on the road, breaking his collarbone. On Wednesday evening, at 10.45, a native named Harry Matoe, of Okaiawa, was driving a car towards the intersection of Gray Street and Princes Street, Hawera, when his tyre blew out and he lost control., The car dashed into an electric light pole near Messrs. Syme and Co.’s office, string the pole with such force that it was thrown considerably out of plumb. Rangi Akiaki, who was a passenger, received a compound fracture of the foot. There was a child in the car, but neither the child nor the driver was hurt. When the car struck the pole the sound of the impact could be heard some distance away, and a lightning-like flash from the electric light momentarily lit up the whole of the surroundings. The damage to the car was not as serious as might, have been expected. The front axle suffered badly. A woman who was crossing the street escaped injury by the smallest margin, and it was fortunate that there was practically no other traffic at the time, of the accident.

A. V. Schwieters, a competitor at the motor cycle sports held at Hawera, met with a rather serious accident near Te Roti on Wednesday evening, when he ran into Messrs. Bennett and Sutton’s car, sustaining a compound fracture of the leg and, it is understood, other injuries as well. He was removed to the Hawera hospital, but few particulars were available yesterday. Messrs. Bennett and Sutton’s car was driven by Mr. W. Jellyman, and it is stated that there were two cars on the road, and that it was in trying to run between the two cars that the accident occurred. The front axle of the car was broken by the collision. —Star.
