HAWERA CLUB’S MEETING. RIDER INJURED IN CRASH, It was estimated that there were 5000 people at the Hawera Motor Cycle Club's sports yesterday, and a splendid day's sport was provided. The races were remarkably free from mishaps until the last race, when Moller had the misfortune to crash with Mangham and Whitehead, necessitating Moller’s removal tn hospital. The two other riders sustained only minor injuries.
Moller, with: two firsts and a second to his credit, topped the list of prize winners with £52. Mangham, also with two firsts and a second, came next with £3B. The other winners were Sykes, three seconds £22, Whitehead one second and two thirds £2l, Davy a first, a second, and a third £22, Claringbold one first £l6, Gaisford one first £l4, Webby a first and a third £ll, Jones £B, Taunton £3, Schwieters £1 10s, and Pearson £l. All the events were got off promptly, and tine officials carried out the duties allotted to them to the satisfaction of everyone, particularly geod work being done by the secretary (Mr. W. V. Patterson). During the afternoon the Hawera Citizens’ Band played popular airs, and the public were also catered for by the provision of afternoon tea, and various stalls for the sale of sweets, cigarettes, etc. The results of the racing are •—« NOVICE HANDICAP, 5 laps; first £5, second £1 10s, third £ I.—L. Webby, 7-9 Harley Davidson (15sec) 1, A. V. Schwieters, 7-9 Harley-Davidson (lOsec) 2, C. E. Pearson, 7-9 Excelsior (15sec) 3. Also started—K. Fraser, 7-9 Harley-Davidson (lOsec) ; J. Alexander, 7-9 Indian (15sec); W. Cunningham, 3y z Rover (55sec) ; O. S. New, 2% Douglas (85sec). The limit man was three-quarters of the way round before the scratch man got away, and was followed by Cunningham and Webby, with Pearson close up. Schweiters passed Alexander and Fraser in the first lap. Webby overtook Cunningham and New in the third lap in the straight, and there was a hard go between Schweiters and Pearson. In the last lap Webby was leading by a big margin, and won with Schweiters and Pearson running neck and neck for second place till half way round, when Schweiters overtook Pearson and finished an easy second, with Pearson third, ■ who came home on one cylinder. Time, 6min. 4*set. NEW ZEALAND MIDDLEWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP, of £2B and blue ribbon; 8 laps. For machines up to 500 c.c. First £l6, second £B, third £4.—L. Mangham, 3% Harley-Dav-idson 1, F. Sykes, 3% Royal Ruby 2, R. J. Jones, 3 N.U.T. 3. Also started—E. C. Gaisford lndian. All the machines were practically of the same h.p., and great interest was taken in this race. Sykes got the best start, closely followed by Mangham and Jones, Gaisford making a poor start. Sykes and Mangham remained in this order, with Jones in third position during the first lap. Mangham sligh!y closed on Sykes at 1% miles, gradually forging ahead and. overtaking him. On coming into the straight he was 20 yards ahead of Sykes and remained in the lead until the finish of the race, coming in eight seconds ahead of Sykes, with Jones a lap and threequarters behind, finishing third. Gaisford pulled out at two and three-quarter miles. At the finish of the race Mrs. B. L. Joll, wife of the president of the club, presented Mangham with the championship ribbon, hearty cheers being given for the winner. Time, Sanin. 29sec. EGMONT RACING CLUB HANDICAP, for machines of 5-6 h.p. or over; eight laps. First £l6, second £B. third £4.—W. Clarlngbold. 7-9 Indian (45sec) 1, H. H. Moller 7-9 Har-ley-Davidson (30sec) 2, S. All got off except Sykes,whose bicycle would not fire. Schweiters and Webby were the limit men and completed a full lap with Schweiters In the lead before Mangham started. At the one and three-quarter miles Schweiters had a spill and Webby got into the lead, followed by Pearson and Taunton. In the third lap Mangham overtook Webby, who was still a lap ahead, but when next they came into the straight Mangham bad reduced Webby’s lead by another 150 yards.- Claringbold. in the fourth lap, overtook the limit man and maintained the lead till the finish, winning by 1 3-ssec from Moller, Whitehead being 9sec behind Moller. Time, 9<min. 4 l-ssec.
TARANAKI HANDICAP, 6 laps; for machines up to 3% h.p. First £l2, second £6, third £3.—L. Mangham 8% Harley-Davidson (scr) 1, F. Sykes 3% Royal Ruby (ssec) 2, W. W. Davy 2% Douglas (35sec) 3. Also started—R. J. Jones 3 N.U.T. (25sec), E. C. Gaisford 3% Indian (25sec), W. C. Goodwin 2% Douglas (55sec), F. Smitti 3% Triumph (70sec), A. New 2% Douglas (105 sec Richards 2% H.B.R. (55sec). The limit man was followed by Goodwin, Richards and Davy, and at the end of the ■ second lap Davy was ahead of these three, Mangham overtook Sykes in his fourth lap and passed Davy on the back of the course. Sykes got ahead of Davy in the fifth lap, the three men maintaining these positions' until the finish. Mangham won by about 80 yards, with Davy about a similar distance behind Sykes. Webby Tirtd completed almost two and a half laps before the scratch man, Mangham, got away. Sykes got ahead of Taunton in his second lap, Webby still maintaining the leading position, after fl laps, with Claringbold in second position, when his machino failed, and he was passed by Moller soon after entering on the seventh lap. At this stage Sykes was in fourth position and IVliltehead fifth, Mangham by this time having overtaken Webby by one lap. Webby stuck to second place, with Whitehead a quarter of ft lap behind. Whitehead forged ahead at a great pace and passed Webby at the back of the course in the eleventh lap, vrith Mangham battling hard for third place. The race finished with Moller winning easily, with Whitehead second and Webby third. Mangham was only 50 yards behind Webby wd gaining quickly. Time, 13min. 18sec.

This race was the most exciting of tlie day, Moller’s victory being received with tremendous cheering. The limit men had completed nearly two laps before Moller got away. Mangham rode a light 3% Harley-Davidson and had 40sec lead of Moller. In his first lap Moller gained a great amount of ground, passing several of those who got away before him, and continued at a terrific pace throughout the race. In the fifth lap Mangham got ahead, and Moller, coming up behind, passed Taunton in the straight at terrific speed, Whitehead coming up behind. Mangham was i<6s'jjng in the eighth lap with Moller gaining. steadily and looking a likely winner. entered on the last lap there was treimendous excitement, and when Moller overtook Mangham and won by about a foot the enthusiasm of the public knew no bounds. Whitehead finished third some distance behind the leaders. As Moller returned to the enclosure the crowd surged round and gave him a splenc/ j ovation. Goodwin led until the fifth lap, when he was overtaken by Gaisford, With Davy, Jones and Claringbold next in order. In the sixth lap Jones‘‘ forged ahead of Davy at the entrance to the straight, but on leaving the straight Davy overtook Jones again, the race finishing with Gaisford winning easily froun Davy and 1 Jones, who were very close together for second and third places. Davy was leading in his second lap, n position which ho maintained until the end. There was Intense excitement when, in the third lap, Sykes and Taunton raced neck and neck up the straight with Moller forging up behind. The fifth lap was also full of excitement, Moller catching up on Mangham at the back of the course. In the last lap, while Moller and Mangham were racing hard for second place, another rider’s machine broke down in front of them, making a smash inevitable. The three came to grief, and as ’a result of the smash Moller, wlio was the most popular rider of the day, was removed to hospital suffering from a broken wrist and other injuries.
