TARANAKI SHOW.

AN EXCELLENT DISPLAY. FINE SHOW OF DAIRY CATTLE. PEOPLE’S DAY TO-DAY. A very fine display of stock was the principal feature of the Taranaki Metropolitan Agricultural Society's forty-sixth annual show which opened on the Waiwakaiho grounds yesterday. In this respect the exhibition eclipses previous fixtures, the general trend of opinion being that the prize winners in the respective sections would be worthy of any agricultural show in the Dominion. The society was favored with ideal weather and the attendance for a first day was good, the gate takings showing an increase over last year. The figures in this connection have been steadily increasing during the last few years, indicating steady progress. The management of the show resulted in the smooth working of all arrangements, reflecting credit on the officials, at the head of whom were Mr. W. B. Grant (president) and Mr. Okey (secretary). The ladies, who were in charge of the catering on behalf of the society, provided all requirements of patrons. Trade .exhibits were made up mainly of farm machinery and requisites and motor cars, a number of Taranaki firms beingj represented. The Taranaki Farmers’ Meat Company’s exhibition of manufacturers was an interesting feature. NOTES ON THE CATTLE.

Reflective of the chief industry of the province dairy cattle were a big feature of the show. Judging of the Jerseys continued late into the afternoon, the section being particularly large and a record for the society. The splendid array of stock was an arresting feature. The judges, Messrs. H. E. Watson and S. R. Lancaster had a busy time. Mr. W. H. Miers’ (Hamilton) “Distinction’s Twylish”, which has secured championships in the males at Hamilton. Auckland and Hawera, was again placed at the lead of the winners. He is a handsome bull, well bred and of fine quality. Mr. A. Ward (of Miro) secured the reserve championship with “Mi/b Meadow’s Maori Boy,” an animal which the judge considered had been badly treated in the past in the matter of securing a place. The female section was also remarkable for good quality. The championship was won by Linn Bros.’ “Victoria’s Farewell,” Mr. A. A. Ward’s “Miro.” also a really good type of cow, being placed as the reserve animal. The three-year-old heifers were somewhat disappointing, but the two-year-olds were a better class, while the yearlings jmade an array probably as strong as any in the Dominion. i In the grades there was a small enYry, a fact which was the subject of some comment by Mr. S. R. Lancaster, the judge, when interviewed by a Daily News reporter. It was deplorable in a province such as Taranaki that a much larger entry was not made. In this connection statements made by stock men indicate that possibly the schedule did not give sufficient encouragement in this class.

Entries in the Shorthorns were somewhat sparse. Two schools were represented as regards type. Turnbull and Sons secured the championship in the male and female classes with “Waikato Prince Buddington” and “Netherly Gipsy” respectively, these being two very fine animals. Mr. J. C. Wright k (Matapu) was the owner of the bull “'V’vtory, of Cornwall Park,” which secured the reserve championship, and the same owner secured the reserve in the section for cows with “Braeside Sweet Nell” In the heifers class Mr. Wright’s “Queen of Cornwall Park” secured first award, and is an animal of the newer type of Shorthorn which gives promise of developing irft-Q a good milker. FRIESIAN® AND AYRSHIRES. Though not strong numerically the Friesians were of good quality. Speaking of the section, the judge (Mr. W. Brash, of Invercargill) said the first cow, Mr. V. Ward’s “Alcartra CloQjhilde Pietje,” was as good as a,ny he had seen this season-? while the animal which secured second, “Lakeside Beauty’s Canary,” owned by Mr. J. W. J. Gardner (Lowgarth) was close up in the point The two and three-year-olds were of fair quality, tho.ugh some were not in show condition. Yearling heifers were very strong and quite up to standard in quality. In the class for bulls, the ' championship was secured by Mr. R. Castle’s (Matapu) “Holland Queen’s Son/’ and the second went to Mr. W. J. Bradford’s (Auroa) “(Bushland Laddie.” The winner was better carried out behind and deep in the body, than the rest of the entries. Yearlings were a good class, and the first prize bull, Mr. Bradford’s “Bushland King Laddie,” was well-grown, and as a sire should leave good milkers. As a section, Ayrshires excelled previous years’ records, this being probably the best show of the breed that the society has made. In quality, taken all round, the stock were excellent and many of the animals were good enough to hold their own amongst bigger classes. The champion cow, Mr. W. Hall’s (Lepperton) “Dewdrop of Brookside” quite stood out on her own, showing fine quality, and a lot of substance. The bull, •‘Highlander of Heather 'Dells,” owned by Mr. A. Weir, of Waitara, was a very fine animal and won oyer the aged classes in the championship, beating, among others, the Hawera champion “Dominion Dalesman.” Mr. W. Hall’s “Dominion Beauty’s Bonus” was placed as reserve champion.. Tn a note on the winner the (M£ G. Carter) stated: This bull is a very fine animal, a credit to his owner, and good enough to compete in any show.

SHEEP AND PIGS. The pigs were an exceptionally fine lot in the opinion of Mr. S. R. Lancaster, who judged that section. Fat sheep included some fine lines of freezers. Mr. Besley stated that in some instances the sheep exhibited as freezers were a. bit heavy. Purebred sheep were favorably commented on by Mr. R. Bremer, of Waverley, and he said the standard of quality generally wars very much improved as compared with two years ago, when he last judged at the Taranaki Society’s show. HORSES. ■Of the horses, hacks and jtonies were a strong feature, and the drftWfi big entries, The

provincial hunting competition was won by the Marton horse Mac, owned by Mr. W. J. Simpson. In regard to judging of the horse section generally, during the day the opinion was expressed by a number of exhibitors that the judge of the draught horse section should also judge the utility class, instead of the light horses judge, as the utility animal generally belonged to the heavy class. This was made a suggestion for the consideration of the committee in framing next year’s schedule. PRIZED LIST. HORSES. DRAUGHTS. Judge: R. D. Knight (Longburn). Stewards: Messrs. T. Smellie, Geo. Given fine weather there should be a very large attendance of people from New Plymouth and the surrounding district on the occasion of People’s Dity today. The efforts during the past few months that have culminated in such a splendid array of dairy stock, horses, sheep, and pigs being brought together t on the show ground certainly warrant the general public showing its appreciation by attending in large numbers. They will find much to instruct, interest, or amuse them.

From early this morning the ring will be occupied with the judging of the remaining horse and cattle events, in readiness for the grand parade of prizewinners, which takes place at 1.30 p.m. and will be followed by a number of jumping competitions, including the hunters' champion jumping competition, for which the first prize is £5O. The side shows should prove an Irresistible attraction, and among others, Captain Greenhaigh’s serpents, etc., Mr. Verne’s teddy bear, and Mr. Vinsen’s freak fowl are worth a visit. The displays of agricultural implements, motor cars, tractors and other labor and timesavers will interest all farmers For the convenience of patrons by rail the afternoon train has been delayed to leave New Plymouth at G p.m., connecting with the Waitara and Whangamomona branch trains. The Citizens’ Band will be in attendance, and will give a programme of music.
