QUESTION OF INDEPENDENCE. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Washington, March 7. Mr. Weeks (Secretary for War), hasannounced • that President Harding, mindful of Mr. Wilson’s recommendation to Congress to grant immediate independence to the Philippines, has decided to send General Wood. to . the islands to determine the advisability of the course. It is understood that President Harding, although previously recorded as not favoring the immediate granting of self-rule to the Filipinos, will probably urge independence if General Wood favors the step.
