THREE DROWNING CASES. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wanganui, March 7. Three drowning cases occurred during the week-end in the vicinity of Wanganui. On Saturday afternoon a boy named Alfred' Edward Waterhouse, was drowned in the river, the body being recovered two hours later. On Sunday morning a man named Alfred Edward Booth was drowned in the Wangaehu River near Mangamahu. While bathing he got out of his depth and was unable to swim. A companion named Ferguson recovered the body five minutes later, but efforts to restore respiration were unsuccessful. Deceased was twenty years of age and a native of England. A Maori boy named Patrick Paki was drowned in Lake Ratana yesterday ; the body was not recovered. DEATH THROUGH BURNS. Auckland, March 7. K. W. Chalmers was badly burned on Saturday evening through, a fire on a launch, caused by a vessel containing kerosene in mistake for water being placed on a primus stove. The laurich was enveloped in flames, and Chalmers, failing to extinguish them, jumped overboard severely burned. He was assisted ashore and the fire on the launch extinguished. Chalmers in in hospital. Later. Chalmers, who was severely burned by kerosene igniting on a launch, died in hospital. MOTORMAN KILLED. ) Christchurch, March 7. A motorman, William Henry Baker, who was severely injured while shunting tramcars on Friday, died in the hospital last night. Deceased, who was one of the oldest members of the tramways staff, leaves a wife and family. FALL FROM A RAFTER. Christchurch, March 7. Chas. Porteus, a Lyttelton Harbor Board employee, fell thirty feet from a rafter while rigging gear in a goodsshed at Lyttleton. A tier of sacks broke the force of the fall to the concrete floor, but he sustained a broken hip and wrist and a severe gash in the head. A RESCUER DROWNED. Wellington, March 7. A drowning accident occurred at Lower Hutt last evening. A little girl who was paddling or bathing in the river, got into difficulties in deep water and William Henry Boyes, insurance agent, jumped into the river fully dressed, but failed to come up again. The girl was eventually saved- by a young man, who made several attempts to reach Boyes’ body, which could be seen from the bridge-, without avail. The body was recovered some 25 minutes later. Efforts to restore the man to consciousness were unsuccessful. Boyes was a married man with two children.
