WHARF CRISIS.
SETTLEMENT HOPES. STATEMENT EXPECTED TO-DAY. ■ WELLINGTON GAS FAILING By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. No finality has yet been reached in connection with the waterside dispute, and the consequent hold-up of much shipping. The conference between the representatives of the shipowners and the Watersiders’ Federation still continues. Though no official statement is available, hopes of an early settlement are expressed by many closely connected with the dispute. A statement is expected to be made to-morrow. The gas supply is in a somewhat parlous position. It was announced to-day that unless the position improves and coal is available the gas supply will be cut off at 6 p.m. to-morrow. Coal stocks are exhausted, and all efforts to secure supplies from various sources ffave failed. Suburban gasworks are in a better position. CHRISTCHURCH SHORT OF SUGAR. Christchurch, Last Night. Owing to the deadlock on the waterfronts, the sugar shortage in Christchurch is*.very serious. THE ONEHUNGA SERVICE. ' RARAWA’S TRIPS SUSPENDED. The service between New Plymouth and Onehunga, carried on by the Rarawa, has been suspended indefinitely. When news reached New Plymouth at the end of last week that the Onehunga wharf had been closed, owing to the waterfront deadlock, it was expected that the consequent absence of cargo would lead to the Rarawa being laid up, and information to this effect was received yesterday. There will consequently be no steamer from the north this morning, and the Rarawa will remain at Onehunga until normal conditions prevail again.
