LAWN TENNIS.
NEW PLYMOUTH CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS. WEBSTER BEATS NICHOLSON. The finals of the Now Plymouth Club’s championships were played on Saturday. In the men’s singles, C. Webster beat J, ('. Nicholson after a close and interesting contest. This t ear marks the first occasion on whidi Nicholson has been defeated since the championships were instituted in 1005. The first set went to Webster 6—3, after a good tussle, but he lost the next I—6. The third he secured o—4, In the last sot Nicholson led 4—2. with good prospects of winning, but Webster reasserted himself and evened up, eventually winning 7 —5. Webster showed remarkably good form, 'and he was particularly brilliant in hit? lobbing, which was most accurdid not show lip to his usuaP'form, but this did not detract from the merit of Webster’s performance, as his was due to a brilliant exhibition of tennis. In the final of the ladies’ singles Miss Rundle beat Miss Simpson 6—4, 6 —4.
