MAIN ARTERIAL ROADS.

PROPOSED STATE CONTROL. AWAKING ROAD INCLUDED. Giving evidence before the County Boundaries Commission Mr. M. H. Wynyard, of Auckland, wbp is president of the Good Roads Association, stated that he had recently been informed by the Minister for Public Works that a Bill dealing with the scheme for the taking over by the Government of the arterial roads throughout New Zealand, had been drafted, and would be circulated during the recess. * The Awakino main road would form a section of this arterial road. The scheme was that all roads so taken over should form an unbroken chain of communication throughout the two islands, and would be placed under the control of an authority apart from local bodies. A centre would be established in each district, and from there a board, composed of a representative of the Government and a representative of the motor traffic, would exercise supreme control of the section of the arterial road within that district. Funds would be raised by a levy on motor traffic and a contribution from the Government, combined with a rated amount from the county. The county would have no jurisdiction at ajl over these roads.
