TURF TOPICS.
(By
"Moturoa.”)
Concluding day at Nelson. Rangitikei weights are due on Monday. To-day’s Akaroa meeting will be held on the Riccarton course. Gray is making a one horse race of the jockeys’ premiership this season. Flight Commander’s dividend Ln the Dannevirke Cup was in the region of a quarter of a century. Tornea was offered for sale after winning at Danncvirke on Thursday, but failed to reach the reserve. A good number of horses were scratched on the second day at Dannevirke owing to the hardness of the track. The dust nuisance was noticeable also. Festivity’s name was missing from the telegraphed list of acceptors for the final event at Dannevirke, and was not on the “correct card.’’ The public took the tip and backed the son of Hallowmas, who won easily after being badly placed at half-way. Sflulterina, by King Soult, won the Nursery at Dannevirke with a lot in l and, and paid a handsome price. Toa Taua .JfJray) was second, and Is now running into fonm. Gray’s mount, Handy, was a warm affair in the Kaitoke Welter on Thursday, but the outsider. Lady General, ran to the front at the end' of a furlong and was never afterwards troubled. Her dividend came as a surprise. *• Asterlna should have been in and dried in the Glengarry Handicap on Thursday, but struck trouble, and had to content with a dead-heat for first place with Tari. Asterina’s backers just about got their money back—with the price of a "spot’’ thrown in. Signyspan looked like coming home on his own in the first hurdle race at Dannevirke when he fell. His rider, the Maori lad ‘“Johnny” (Vairoa, got the shock of life, and he was painfully nervous when he took the mount on the second day. With a vigorous horseman on top Slgnysian would have made the .winner Tornea, look very cheap. Rouen was backed as if the Hartgill Memorial Handicap at Dannevirke was all over, but Flight Commander (McCormack) again led the field home * Kula, who ran two seconds and a third this week, is as fine as a match, and badly needs a spell. All Rangitikei backed Sir Fanciful at Nelson on Thursday, but his party will require more than one victory to get square on their losses. Sir Fanciful should engage tiie attention of the judge at Nelson or at Blenheim. Lord Usk showed a lot of pace in his races at Awapuni at Christmas, and his double victory at Nelson was anticipated. Hushman and Munition read as well as anything in the Hurdles at Opunake, but if Karen o jumps well one need took no further. The Opunake Cup looks fairly open, though Egmont Park (8.5) is well treated. If a surprise is in store, Explorer may turn the trick. Active is no. champion, but a race at Opunake should not be beyond his abilities. Nemaline is another that should be worth keeping in mind. Old Tirana returned to form at Dannevirke on Wednesday, and if "Hughie” Johnston keeps him right he should get amongst the money at Opunake. j Mr. H. McManaway had a great big bay two-year-old colt, by Gazeley—-Complement, at the show at Marton on Wednesday Though only in the rough, the colt was admired. Insurrection, by KUbroney—Ruthful, was the horse picked out of the stable by Trainer J. W. Lowe when he parted with Messrs. Riddlford's horses. Lowe’s judgment was correct, as the gelding proved by winning tlie Nelson Cup on Thursday. Patrons of the Wanganui Trotting Club have mostly spent the week getting. the dust out of their clothes. “Dirt” tracks may be all very well in some places, but at Wanganui tlie dust was awful. Some years ago a claytrack was laid down at Alexandra Park (Auckland) af considerable expense The latest t*
that tlie track is to be sown, a grass track being reverted to. The one-time crack horseman, "‘Charlie” Jenkins, paid a flying visit to his old home in Bulls 6n Friday, and |iis many friends were pleased to note that he had made a good recovery fr ; om his long illness. Armorel is ad’ game as they make them. After getting a showing up at Wanganui she was -made a good second favorite to Soldier’s Love in the Juvenile at Dannevirke, and, when she raced the favorite to a standstill, struggled gamely and stalled off Dissertation’s late run. Whetoki, who has been threatening to win a race for a long time, duly materialised at Dannevirke on Wednesday, but with Transmission and Slgnysian out of the way through falls there was very little merit in the victory. “Alf.” Shearsby broke the ice at Dannevirke with Sunbath (Sunny Lake—Amarilla), who came along at the right end in the Maiden and won nicely. She appears to be useful. Pente was unlucky to lose the Dannevirke Cup, and her backers lost a small percentage of their investments. However, she is worth doubling up on. The Manawatu Daily Times reports that Mr. Thomas, owner of Marula and others, was fined £2 by the Dannevirke stewards for not confirming by letter nominations that had been telegraphed. This is a rule that is more often honoured “in the breach, etc.” i Verbosity won a double at Diinnevlrße- this week, but his dividends were very small. Verbosity is by Demosthenes from Suratura, and is a beautifully bred three-year-old.
Several champions of the spring were reproduced at Dannevirke, but Duo, Gasbag and Fulsome (to mention three of them) looked very much on the big side, and will require a few races to get them fit for the Easter meetings.
Mr. E. J. Watt continues to win races in ’Stralia. At Rosehill on the 19th ult. be scored with Aites, a three-year-old gelding by Wolawa—Perseis, who started at a fair "price,” and won by a fair margin. It was current gossip at Marton on New Year’s Day that Flight Commander was for sale for one hundred and fifty of the best and brightest (or filthiest and greasiest in these days of paper currency), and the son of Martian would have proved a eheap investment. His latest successes—at Dannevirke—were accompanied by two-figure dividends.
Racehorse nomenclature must be In a tight corner in 'Stralia when they have to fall back on Maoriland names of long ago. At RoseRyi recently there was a winner rejoicing in the name of Battleaxe (of happy memory I) while a Square Deal and Jack Pot also earned place money. At other Aussie meetings about the same time familiar names cropped up, such as Glen Nevis, Matlock, Volo, St. Ursula, Simla, Aerial, Golden Rose, Devotion, The Student, Stetson, Radial, Stevedore, The Digger, Indigo, Blue Cross, Tavistock, Antarctic, The Rover, Canowindra, and the evergreen Faugh-a-Ballagb. Acceptances for the Opunake Racing Cluh's annual meeting close on Thursday, March 10, at 5 p.m.
