Surprise was expressed by the tenants and lessees of the railway reserve in Broadway, when it became known today that the upset rentals, for most of the allottments had been fixed at £5 per foot frontage. The valuation of the property has been assessed at approximately £lOO per foot and the rentals have been based at the rate of 5 per cent of the valuations. Opinions differ as to what should be a fair valuation to place upon the land, but the tenants are unanimous in stating that the upset rentals are much in excess of their expectations. The allottments 1 vary in width from 15 feet to under 40| feet, and the majority have a, depth of 06 feet, and the leases will be for a| period of 21 years, with the right ofrenewal for a further 21 years, full pro-' tection being given for improvements; The auction sale will be held by Messrs. Newton King, Ltd., at their Stratfordl sale rooms on Saturday, March 19, and information as to where the plans and conditions may be seen, is advertised in this issue.
THE NEW REGIME. The changed conditions brought about as a result of the Saturday half-holiday being adopted in Stratford, were in evidence for the first time to-day, when the shops remained open, instead of closing as usual at 12 noon. As far as could be judged business in town this afternoon was fairly good and compared favdfably with other “off” days during the week. The Hawera Show attracted a good number of Stratford residents, but despite this fact the streets presented quite a usual appearance for an open day, and the public generally 1 appeared to be quite reconciled to the change. An attempt is being made to make Friday take the place of Saturday as the market day of the week,-and tomorrow (Friday) the auctioneers will hold their weekly sales and the shops will remain open until 9 p.m. GENERAL. The ladies of the Avon Croquet Club have decided.to hold a garden party on the Avon bow’ling abd croquet greens on March 12, the proceeds from which will be devoted to beautifying the | grounds. Energetic steps are being taken by the members of the newly-formed Saturday Dalf-holiday Association, towards securing signatures to the requisition asking that a poll be held on the half-holiday question in April. Although Stratford already has the Saturday half-holiday it is considered the best policy to give the burgesses- an opportunity of confirming the council’s decision at a poll.
