SPORTS AT WAITARA. A SUCCESSFUL MEETING. The Clifton Football Club’s first annual sports were held, yesterday at the Camp Reserve, Waitart/ Though a misty rain fell both before and dfter the meeting, fine weather prevailed during the whole-bourse of the sports programme. ■ The various events were well contested, and- tl’je fields In every case were exceptionally,,|arge. An . energetic committee, under the leadership of slr t D. George, had the grounds and appointments’ in good order, whilst the results ,of events were promptly announced. The catering arrangements were In the . hands of the ladies’ committee. During the, afternoon Mrs. Wiseman’s orchestra of nine instruments gave a very enjoyable programme of music. Coleman (10yds) 1, W. J. Sharrock (50yds) 2, W. S. Sharrock (80yds) 3. Time, 2min. 42sec. Twelve started. A good race in which the field was well bunched. Coleman won by about half a dozen yards. One mile and a half.—A. J. Coleman (15yds) I, W. J. Sharrock (65yds) and J. Cross (35 yds) dead heat 2. Time, 4min. 14sec. Eleven starters. The field were all together In the last lap, when Coleman came through and won a well-judged race. Two miles.—A. J. Coleman (scr) 1, W. Parker (80yds) 2, W. J. Sharrock (85yds) 3. Time, smin. 45sec. Eleven competed. What promised to be an exceedingly close race was marred two laps from home by five competitors coming to grief when negotiating a corner. Only the placed men finished. ’OTHER EVENTS. Maiden Race.—W. Jones 1, K. Lye 2, K. Elgar 3. Boys’ Race, 100 yards (for medal presented by Mr. T. Taylor).—C. Tate 1, R. Sampson 2. School Girls’ Race (50 yards).—Miss Wells 1, Miss Fairley 2, Miss Smith 3. Youths’ Race, under 17, 220 yards (for medal presented by Mr. J. Goodwin (3ft) 31ft Un 1, F. Barriball (Ift) 30ft 2. HORSE JUMPING. In this event the horses were required to jump two flights of hurdles. There were eight entries, some splendid leaps were witnessed. Result: Mr. Jas. Edwin’s Echo (ridden by L. Pepperell) 1, Mr L. I>pperell'9 Black J/ick (ridden by owner) 2. After this event exhibition jumps were given by Mr. L. Knuekey’s pony. As a fitting finale to the sports meeting a, social ana long-night dance was held In the Cliftbn Hall In the evening.
