THE DOMINION MEETING. FIRST DAY’S RESULTS. By Telegraph.—Press Afsodstlon. Trenihim, March 3. • The Dominion Rifle Association’s champion- . ship meeting opened this morning In dull weather. Soon alter eight o’clock the men were squadded and addressed by Colonel Collins, chief executive officer, who welcomed all, especially the new men, to the range, and wished them success. The colonel announced that the total entries were 441, of whlcir’ 357 Were rifle club men, 56 territorials, and 18 cadets. He had expected about 40 Australians to be present, but transport and other difficulties had prevented this. The matches put on specially for them, however, would be retained on the programme. The total prize money offered was £2OOO, in addition to many trophies. The programme would not be rushed this year, and he hoped to finish with the King's Match on Friday week. TL'e-Bisley 1920 target will be used up to 600 yards. Colonel Collins, amidst expressions of regret from the parade, announced that he had decided to retire from the position of chief executive officer after this meeting. During the morning three more rtfiemsn turned up, malting the total present 444, wtyle ten other entrants failed to appear. As the morning progressed the weather was muggy, but eventually the sun struggled through. There is the usual gathering of old halbitues, some of whom have been shooting at championship meetings for a quarter of a century and more. Besides Crouton, who defends the championship, the following former belt holders are competing: W. Duncan, G. Hyde, F. H. James, R. J. King, L. G. Loveday, W. N. Masefield, J. W, Milroy, D. Roots, “Carbine" Ross. Piper, who this week won the Walrarapa ctampionship and about £7O in prize money, is a competitor, and under the rules is as • tyro. The official announcement to this effect caused a ripple of laughter through the ranks on parade this morning. Twentysix men took £1 each, with scores ranging down to 85, and twenty 10s each with scores of 85 and 84.
