A. fire at Enmore in a building occupied by the Inlaid Wood Company and the Morris McMahon Company caused damage to the extent of £lO,OOO. LOSS OWING TO STRIKES. Melbourne, March 2. The Commonwealth Statistician estimates that during the past five years strikes have been responsible f<?r the loss of working days, and £10,325,472 sterling in wages. JAVELIN-THROWING RECORD. Melbourne, March 2. N. Naukler, Finnish Consul-General, has established a new record in javelinthrowing of 44ft sin. N.S.W. STOCK RETURNS. Sydney, March 3. Stock inspectors’ returns* for the past year show a decrease of 3.500,000 sheep, 80,500 horses, but an increase of 3000 cattle. NEW GUINEA MANDATE. Melbourne, March 3. Mr. Hughes has received an advance copy of the mandate for former German New Guinea. It follows closely the main provisions of Article 22 of the Covenant of the League of Nations, but differs slightly in its language. FLOUR MILLS CLOSING. Sydney March 3. The milling industry is in a parlous condition. Some mills have closed and others are working short time. The reason is that wheat is unobtainable at a price which would enable millers to export to the East (Australia’s main export market).
