BRITISH BY-ELECTION.

V.C. DEFEATS LABOR LEADER. By Telegraph.—-Press Assn.—Copyright. Received March 3, 9.30 p.m. London, March 3. The result of East Woolwich, the first of a series of by-elections, is remarkable. It was believed to be a safe Labor seat, but was won by Captain , Gee, V.C., Coalition candidate, with 13,724 votes. Mr. Ramsay Macdonald secured 13,041 votes. Mr. Will Crooks strongly recommended Mr. 'Macdonald. His defeat is attributed not only to the candidates’ comparative war records, but to- the assertiveness and turbulence of the “red raggers.”—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
