4 s the result, of Wellington carpenters leaving work on account of the Builders’ Association fixing & Ski as maximum wages, several city building firms have ceased operations. The union states that almost all the men have been re-engaged at 3s or more. The annual gift day held by the Kawaroa Park Society prior to the Easter fete, took place yesterday, when a splendid response was made by the public, donations of cash and gifts of all kinds coming in freely. The bungalow presented a pretty appearance, having been specially decorated by Mrs. Wa’llach. During the afternoon a musical programme, which had been' arranged by Mrs. Fred Hooker, was given, the following contributing: Mesdames Wood and Rowe, Misses Miller, Cocker, Jones, Thompson (2), Loveridge and Norma and Messrs-. North and Hooker.
A fire occurred in the Patea Harbor Board’s dumping shed on Wednesday morning, resulting in the shed and its contents, including the dumping plant, being destroyed. At one tjine there were fears for the safety of the Harbor Board’s dredge, but the crew, assisted by Mr. Grainger and a band of willing workers, soon had the vessel out of danger,- and its steam pump later on proved ( of great service in helping to save the wharf. The shed, at the time of the fire, contained 470 bales of wool and general merchanflise, and a motor car belonging -to Mr. FindW, stationmaster, all of which were completely destroyed. The origin of the’ fire is a mystery, the general impression being that it started through spontaneous combustion in some of the wool.
The Tabor Shield competition, an annual swimming event under the auspices of the New ‘/Plymouth branch of the Royal Life-saving Society, which usually arouses much enthusiasm and draws keen competition, was to have taken place yesterday on the East End beach ? but lapsed for want of entries. The East End team (holder of the shield) was the only team entered and therefore retains the shield by default. A fair number of the public had gathered on the beach to witness- the contest and were keenly disappointed when it became known that there was to he no competition. However, an exhibition of life-saving was given by the East End team, which proved the usefulness of the organisation in the case of a drowning accident. The Hon. W. Nosworthy, Minister for Agriculture, announced on Saturday that the control of prices*in respect of apples in England had been removed by the Imperial Government, as was- shown by the following cable from the High Commissioner to the New Zealand Government :—“With reference to my letter of November 2nd. Ministry for Food has revoked apple prices order so that as from February 14th apples free. Ministry for Food announces that that step has been rendered possible by supplies still available and expected increased quantities to be shipped from Australasia —1,250,000 cases compared with 830,000 cases- last year They add that, there is no reason to apprehend any undue inflation of prices.”
The secretary of the Anglican Home Mission Bazaar at Uruti desires to acknowledge with grateful thanks- the receipt of £4 collected by» Mrs. M. Bower from Okau and Kotare residents.
