TE ARAROA DISTURBANCES. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Gisborne, March, 1. As a sequel to the New Year disturbance at Te Araroa, sixteen Natives were charged at Waipiro Bay with having assembled for an unlawful purpose. The informations were dismissed. Two others, charged with assault and causing bodily harm to the publican, were committed for trial. Another Native, charged with hitting a Native girl on the head with a beer bottle, was remanded, the Gisborne police stating it was a serious casrA CHARGE OF THEFT. Wellington, March, 1. Lisle Douglas Marshall, formerly a member of the police force, was charged yesterday with theft of 22s Gd, the property of the Mount Cook Police Social Club. The man admitted taking the money and -was sentenced to 14 days’ imprisonment. CARPENTERS ADOPT GUILD SYSTEM. Wellington, March 1. The secretary of the Carpenters’ Union says that about 70 men have left their jobs since -Friday as the result of the employers-’ decision to limit wages to 2s 9d per hour. He says the union is applying no coercion and some members have accepted the reduced wages, but these are comparatively few. An interesting development is the decision of the Union to engage under the guild system in the business of building or altering houses. It is believing it can compete successfully with the present contractors. SUGAR SUPPLIES. Wellington, March 1. There is plenty of sugar afloat on t'he harbor, but very little for sale in the shops in Wellington. The Minister in charge of the Department of Industries and Commerce stated to-day that a port tion of the second lot of sugar brought overseas for the purpose of augmenting New Zealand supplies had reached Wellington, but, owing to the waterfront trouble, could not be unloaded.
