TURF TOPICS.

(By “Moturoa.”) Fellding entries close to-night. Opunake weights are due on Thursday. Races at Dannevirke on Wednesday and Thursday. Weights for the principal events at the A.R.C. Easter meeting should appear on Tuesday. Splendid acceptances have been received for the first day of the Dannevirke Racing Club’s autumn meeting, and Transmission, Miss Elva, Sunbath, Duo, Pente and Soldier's Love will all find backing on Wednesday. Visitors to Wanganui got a “set back’’ when they struck the scale of charges for admission to the trots on Friday. “Gentlemen Gs, ladies 35,” was the tariff, with no “outside” for the battlers. The club has no grandstand, a building permit being unobtainable, but a stewards’ stand and good-sized tote house have been erected. Ti e tote itself is a diminutive affair, and more pay out windows might have been put in use to ensure prompt payments. The track, a “dirt” one, was in good order considering it is a new one, but the dust was,a nuisance at times. The meeting opened well, and racing was very interesting.. Mr. W. L. Falconer (secretary) and his assistants did well under the circumstances, ■ and patrons are sure to roll up again to-day in big numbers.

The Introductory Handicap attracted a very rough crowd, the winner turning up in Hetty King, a member of J. Bryce’s team, which returned a short price. Foster’s Handicap was a pretty race, and General Advance put up a good performance by winning from 60 yards behind, paying a fair "price." Peace, who was only a couple of lengths away, should do better to-day. Rio Grande, 132 yards behind, was set an impossible task in the Kirkwood Handicap, which fell to Ballin. who easily beat an even money favorite in Admiral Derby. The back-markers never had a show in the Wanganui Trotting Cup, the .well-backed limit horse, Indra, going smoothly throughout, and scoring bj‘ a safe margin from Onyx (12 yards behind). For some unaccountable reason old Warlock (48 yards behind) was neglected in the Morton Memorial Handicap, which he won very easily from Dandy Rose (limit), and paid the best dividend of the day. The public were again astray in sizing up the President's Handicap, which resolved itself into a duel between the limit pair Malmsbup- and Admiral Derby, the former having most “steam” left in the concluding round. Admiral Derby is more than useful, and will be Well backed again to-day. Nell Pointer (limit) was a strong tip for the Tramway Handicap, but did not have much to spare from Sea Nympl: and Inora at the finish. Indra should be all the better for her race. Edna and Jays Belle, both on the limit, were commissioned for the Eastbrook Handicap, and they fought out a fine finish, the former winning by half a length. Logan Queen, who finished third, should be worth watching in the near future.

Warplane's breakdown is not so serious as at first anticipated, and Trainer George Price expects to get the game little fellow in racing fettle again after a short spell.

Splendid nominations were received, for the Opunake annual meeting, the horses being of good class, and all events filled well. This sear’s meeting is being looked forward to by hosts of sportsmen who have had the pleasure of sampling Opunake hospitality in the past, and a splendid gathering Is certain.
