THE STRIKE.
SHIPPING TO RESUME. CONDITIONS OF THE SETTLEMENT. HEAVY LOSS TO THE WORKERS. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.— Copyright. Received Feb. 27, 5.5 p.m. Sydney, Feb. 27. It is estimated that over £1,200,000 has been lost in wages in consequence of the shipping strike. The settlement reached provides that no question of manning is to be raised regarding ships not being put into commission immediately. The z manning question is to be decided by a manning committee equally representing the shipowners and seamen. This committee is to be constituted by March 1 at the latest, its decisions to be binding on both parties. A conference on the suggested alterations of the present general agreement as to wages and conditions is to be held within a fortnight, the agreement to continue in force until December 31, or until mutually determined. The recommissioning of ships will proceed as quickly as possible. Arrangements are being made for the dispatch of the Maheno to Auckland on Monday afternoon.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
