February 25. Mr. T. A. B. Bailey, S.M., presided over the fortnightly sitting of the Magistrate’s Court to-day. Henry Kilpatrick, who did not appear, was charged with procuring liquor during the currency of a prohibition order, and further with having supplied liquor to one Catherine G’Oonnor, a prohibited person. Both offences were alleged to have been committed at the Stratford show grounds on November 25, 1920. After evidence had been given by G. Rowson, caretaker of the show grounds, and Constable J; H. Gill, the Magistrate said there was no evidence that defendant had actually supplied the liquor to Mrs. O’Connor, and that the charge would be dismissed. On the charge of procuring liquor for himself, defendant was convicted and fined £3 and £1 7s costs. Judgment was given for the plaintiff by default in only one civil case, that of Harold Joseph Susans v. Cornelius John Wiley, £2.9 le 7d and costs £4 7s. On a judgment summons J. H. Anderson was ordered to pay the Te Mata Vineyards, the sum of £8 3s fid, in default eight days’ imprisonment, the order to be suspended as long as «the defendant paid £2 per month in reduction of the debt. Applications for land agents’ licenses were made by Hugh Linn, Richard Henry Susans and Francis Rooney, all of whom were granted licenses. NEW RAILWAY STATION. An important statement in regard to the projected railway station alterations at Stratford is contained in a letter tfhich Mr. R. Masters, M.P. has received from Mr. Massey, as Minister of Railways. Mr. Masters has on frequent occasions brought this matter under the notice of the Minister, and has emphasised the urgent need for expediting the work of making the alterations. Mr. Massey, in his reply, states that the plans are in course of preparation and a commencement will be made with the new layout of the station as early as practicable after the plans are completed. “The scheme generally is regarded as one of the essential and urgent works,” adds Mr. Massey, “and there will be no avoidable delay in putting it in hand.” The new railway station will be placed about three-quarters of a mile south of the present station, near the corner of Warwick and Mountain Roads. In order to carry out the work the Railway Department will require to take over a number of houses in 1 the locality of the proposed station yards and a portion of Juliet Street north will be closed. GARDEN PARTY. A garden party was held at Mrs. G. Sangster’s residence on the Beaconsfield Road yesterday afternoon, the function being arranged by the Ladies’ Guild of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. The weather was excellent and a number of visitors journeyed from Stratford by car, while others came from Toko and surrounding districts. A marquee was erected on the lawn, and a most successful sale of articles, made by the ladies, as well as fruit, produce and sweets was held. Afternoon tea, fruit salads and jellies were supplied, by Mrs. Sangster and her willing helpers, and the whole gathering was a complete success financially and socially. During the afternoon musical items were contributed by Mesdames E. F. Hollands and S. Robinson, Mr. W. J, Newton and a recitation by Miss Wilson. Mrs. W. J. Wilson played the accompaniments. ** hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr. and Mrs. Sangster for their help in holding the function, and hopes were expressed that it would be made an annual event. The settlers of Whangamomona in the backblocks have suffered a good deal of inconvenience for some considerable time, by reason of the fact that the public telephone has not been installed in the Whangamomona railway station. Mr. R. Masters, M.lcommunicated with the Primp Minister as to the request that the telephone be installed in the station for the convenience of settlers in the district, and has received a reply to the effect that arrangements have been made for the installation of this necessary convenience.
