ATHLETICS.

SPORTS AT URENUI. A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. The annual sports (meeting in connection with the Urenui Athletic Club was held on the picturesque Urenui Recreation Ground yesterday. and proved a most enjoyable gathering. The weather was fine, and there wa.s a good attendance of the public from all parts of the district, as well as from Waitara ana New Plymouth. The sport provided was oY a very interesting nature, there being large entries in boui the chopping and running events. Additional interest was added to the former by the pre sence of the New Zealand champion, J. K. Stewry, who npminatede late. He annexed the 12in. chop, Ming a great exhibition. The committee kept matters moving well, and got the events off well to time. The medal donated by Mr. W. T. Jennings, M.P., for the Local Handicap, was won by V. C. Tate, whilst the ftedal donated by Mrs. Coleman for the points prize in the athletic events provided a close contest between A. N. Kirk (Stratford) and V. C. Tate, th-; femer gaining the award. Mr. L. Rattenbury, as starter, got the fields away well, whilst Messrs: R. H. Pigott, A. H. llalcombe, and E. Putt, as judges, gave their decisions promptly and correctly, though the handicappers, Messrs. W. H. Fuller and C. A. Rumball, had correctly gauged the merits of the competitors and gave them some close finisihes to adjudicate on. All the arrangements for the conduct of the meeting had been made by the officials, with the result i that tl:e meeting passed off very smoothly, I the joint secretaries (Messrs. G. N.» Fuller i and D. L. Tate) having everything up to date. The luncheon and afternoon tea arrangements were made under the control of a ladies’ committee, of which Mesdames Fuller and Rumball and Miss Pigott were the organisers, • and the catering was of that high standard for which Urenui is noted. The soft drinks stall was in the capable hands of Messrs. Street, Spur, and Des Forges. The protest committee were called together on one occasion, D. H. George protesting against the half-mile being awarded to Pennington, on the grounds that Pennington had . started off 50 yards instead of 35 yards. The* protest committee, however, decided not to alter the plaeings, considering that even if the mistake had been made, the extra fifteen yards did not affect the result, as Pennington won so easily.
