CARNIVAL AT STRATFORD. SOME GOOD RACES. " A successful carnival was held In the school swimming baths by the Stratford Swimmini Chib yesterday afternoon. The weather conditions wer? comparatively good conslderlnii the recent cold .nap, and the attendance «ai highly satisfactory. The carnival wa,s opened by Mr. J. W. Boon, chairman of the School Committee, wbo congratulated the club on Its success. The club had gone to a good deal of expense in Improving the appointments •in connection with the bath, and on behalf of the School Committee he desired to express their thanks to the club. A new springboard fiad recently been put in and the stand much improved. Referring fb the value of swimming. Mr. Roon said that it was a fine thing for every boy and girl tG learn to swim, because swimming was a splendid exercise and was valuable in saving life. In fact he thought that no boy or girl should leave school until they had a knowledge yf swimming. He expressed the hope that the time would not be far distant when the batt could be made bigger, and 1 e anticipated that the public would bo quite willing to subscribe to such an object. After congratulating the club on the fine programme it hud arranged for that day, Mr. Boon declared the carnival opened. The principal officials were as follows Supervisor, Mr. F. D. Gafferey; handicapper, Mr. W. Plnhey; judges, Messtj. D. J. Malone and W. P. Pratt; starter. Mr. W. Power; time-keepers, Messrs. W. Pinhey and Gardner; tonorary secretary, Mr L. B. Baird. All the events were got off promptly, and the programme was carried through without a hitch. Following are the results:— Mens 50 Yards Maiden.—First heat: W. Boon Isec 1, Wright Isec 2.
