CENTRAL SCHOOL DISTRICT.

PLAYGROUNDS IMPROVEMENT. CAMPAIGN FOR FUNDS. Matters affecting the Central and Courtenay Street schools were discussed at a meeting of parents held in the Soldiers’ Club last night, the Mayor (Mr. F. E. Wilson) presiding. Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P. (chairman of the Central Committee) outlined the efforts that had been made to secure improvements at the Courtenay and Central Schools, and stated that it was practically assured that a grant would be made for a new building at Courtenay Street. He explained, however, that in the plans of the proposed new school provision had been made for a dental and medical room for inspection of pupils, and though this idea had originally been instituted by the Department they now wanted to cut out the room as proposed in the plan. The meeting decided to cordially support the “attitude of the Board and the committee in its endeavor to secure approval of the plan of the Courtenay Street School as designed by the board’s architect, and protests against the proposal of the department to cut out the necessary medical and dental room therein provided.” In connection with the improvement of the play ground at the proposed new school and also at the Central, it was explained that this was the duty of the committee, and the meeting went into the question of raising the necessary funds. Those present formed themselves into a committee to co-operate with the school committee and formulate a scheme for obtaining funds, either by entertainments or by other means.

The following executive committee was chosen: Mesdames Martin, Frethey and Coleman, and Messrs. S. G. Smith. Davies, H. Dempsey, H. A. Stratford, F. Robertshaw, V. Elliott, R. L. Cooper, and F. A. Coleman. The executive will meet next Tuesday nigjit to discuss proposals. 1
