TARANAKI’S EXPORTS.
LAST YEAR’S TOTAL. WORTH OVER FOUR MILLIONS. INCREASE PROMISED THIS YEAR. The value of the exports from Taranaki during the year ended December 31, 1920, amounted to £4,168,835, as compared with £5,058,447 in 1919 and £2,656,754 in 1918. The total for 1918 was low because of lack of shipping through which there was a great accumulation of produce in cold storage at the end of tl>e year. The figures for 1919 were, as a further consequence, somewhat fictitious because most of that accumulation waa shipped during the year. Perhaps the average of the two totals, or about £5,850,000, would fairly accurately represent the annual production for export, in which case the 1920 total shows a fair increase over previous years. The following table shows how the totals for the three years were made up:—
Totals £2,656,754 £5,058,447 £4,188,835 The exports were divided among three ports—New Plymouth* Waitara, and Patea—in the following proportions:— 1918. 1919. 1920. £ £ £
Already this year produce to the value of over £850,000 has been shipped from New Plymouth and Waitara, as compared with £380,623 worth in January and February, 1920, an increase of nearly £500,000, so that 1921 should show a substantial advance upon the 1920 total.
