RETURNED SOLDIERS’ PICNIC.
ENJOYABLE DAY’S OUTING. Under the auspices of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, a most enjoyable picnic was held yesterday at the beautiful riverside residence of Mrs. and Mr. C. H. Burgess at the Meeting of the Waters,. About 100 returned soldiers and friends made the journey, and the day being fine and all conditions conducive to a good day’s pleasure, the function was a thorough success. The Citizens’ Band rendered a. much appreciated programme of music and various competitions were indulged in, but the greatest pleasure of the day was that imparted by the beauty of “Haparanui,” generously thrown open for the occasion by Mr. and Mrs. Burgess. Afternoon tea on a generous scale was handed round. *
During the afternoon, Mr, McDiarmid, on behalf of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, made two presentations to members of that body. Mr. F. Hartnell, who is leaving .shortly for England, was presented with a beautiful travelling rug as a mark of appreciation of the services rendered by him to the association, and Mr. N. Hill, on the eve of his marriage, was also the recipient of a handsome present. Also, on behalf of the association, Mr. McDiarmid, in a happy little speech, heartily thanked the host and hostess, not only for their generosity in opening their 'grounds for the present occasion, but for the unstinted manner in which they had thrown themselves into the work of helping the sdldiers during and after the war.
