EMBEZZLEMENT ADMITTED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Feb. 23. Joseph Henry Pike, who was arrested just before the departure of the Sydney boat, pleaded guilty to embezzling £423 from his employers, Ferguson and Osborne. He stated to the police that gambling was the cause of his downfall. He was committed for sentence. x * INSURANCE OFFICERS’ GUILD. Wellington Feb. 23. The Insurance Officers’ Guild concluded its first Annual Dominion conference. Mr. E. E. Hammond presided, delegates from the four centres being present. Mr. Hammond referred to the progress of the guild, which was inclusive of members of fire, marine, and resident staffs. A hope was expressed that the life section would join. JThe conference resolved to heartily support the movement for a federation of guilds. Considerable time was devoted to the educational aspect of the guild movement, and a committee was appointed to confer with other guilds with reference to the scheme for commercial education co-operating with the university. The election resulted: —President, Mr. E. E. Hammond (Wellington); vice-pre-sidents, H. Clay (Auckland), C. H. S. Storyer (Christchurch), G. T. Dawson (Dunedin). Mr. H. T. Mourant was reappointed general secretary. ARCHITECTS’ INSTITUTE. Napier. Feb. 23. At the annual conference of the New Zealand Institute of Architects, which was opened to-day, Mr. J. L. Salmond (Dunedin) presiding, the mayor (Mr. V. Brown), welcomed the delegates. The legislation Committee recommended that Parliament be asked to give the institute the power of bringing members, against whom serious misconduct was alleged, before the Supreme Court to be tried similarly to lawyers, but that minor offences be still dealt with by the institute’s council. The recommendation was adopted. The general meeting of the institute will be held
