SHORTAGE OF APPRENTICES.
BUILDING TRADE AFFECTED By Telegraph—Press Association, Napier, Last Night. The serious shortage of apprentices in the building and allied trades was discussed by the architects’ conference. 'Mr. J. Greig (Hawke’s 1 Bay) moved, and Mr. W. M. Page (Wellington) seconded, that the council of the Institute confer with the Builders’ Federation and other interested bodies on the apprentices question with a view of concerted action. Taking the case of Napier, Mr. Greig quoted figures to show that apprentices had decreased since 1914 from 10 to nil in the carpentering trade, two to one in painting, and 14 to nil in plumbing. An amendment by Mr. T. H. Rattle (Wanganui), seconded by Mr. C. H. Roberts (Southland), that the Council wri|e to the builders pointing out the necessity of inducing more apprentices to come to tfye trade, was lost, and Mr. Greig's motion was carried.
