A STOLEN SAPPHIRE.
UNIQUE POLISH HEIRLOOM, SEVERAL ARRESTS MADE. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Feb. 23, 5.5 p.m. Paris, Feb. 22. The adventures of a unique deep blue sapphire, weighing 291 carats, is occupying the attention of the French police. It was an heirloom in the Polish family of Count Xavier Brenicki. The Count carried it on his person when Warsaw was occupied in July, 1918, until a pick-
pocket stole the gem, which seemed, wholly lost. The French police traced the sapphire to a dealer named who bought it for 185.000 francs from a Lithuanian dealer, recognising it as a, stone which had been exhibited at the international exhibition. Feurschwanger decided to cut it into nine stones, hoping to evade recognition, the weight being reduced to 135 carats. The police have now arrested Feurschwanger and six others, including a Lithuanian and two stone-cutters. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
