CONFERENCE OF PROPRIETORS. THE ANNUAL MEETING. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The annual meeting of the Newspaper Proprietors’ Association of New Zealand (Inc.) was opened this evening. Mr. P. Selig (Christchurch Press) was- in the chair, and there were also present: Messrs. J. Coombe (Manawatu Standard), A. MeNicol, M.P. (Dannevirke News), W. C. Whitlock (Tribune, Hastings), W. C. Weston (Taranaki Herald), W. Dinwiddie (Hawke’s Bay Herald), T. C. List (Taranaki Daily News), J. O’Brien (Grey River Argus), H. V. Duigan (Wanganui Herald), C. Leys and A. Seabrook (Auckland Star), W. T. Thomas (Taumarunui Press), W. C. Cargill (Morrinsville Star), C. Abbey Jones (Southland News), R. J. Gilmour (Southland Times), W. R. Kettle (Greymouth Star), E. G. Kerr (Timaru Herald, North Otago Times), A. E. Copping (Stratford Post), W. F. B. Greville (New Zealand Dairyman), C. S. Smith (Evening Star, Dunedin), Dr. Scholefield (Walrarapa Age), L. Blundell and W. J. Blundell (’Evening Post), Sir George Fenwick (Otago Daily Times), C. Earle and A. Sindo (Dominion), George Worth (Wanganui Chronicle), A. A. Lucas (Nelson Mail), G. C. Codlin (New Zealand Herald), A. Muir (Gisborne Herald), C. McDonald (Pahiatua Herald), J. McAra (Majaura Ensign), R. R. Bell (Ashburton Guardian), C. East (Northern Advocate, Whangarei), F. Pirani (Feilding Star). A. A. Reese (Tiaroha News), C. W. Walker (Hawera Star), R. Furness (Marlborough Express), and L. J. Berry (secretary). The president referred to the death of Mr. R. Gywnne, of the Waikato Times, Hamilton, the news of which had just been received. He was formerly a very regular member and one who took a keen interest in its welfare. A vote of condolence with the relatives was passed, all members standing. Mr. Selig then delivered his annual address. He referred to the deaths since the last meeting of the Hon. George Jones, M.L.C., Mr. Henry Weston, of the Taranaki Herald, and Mr. W. A. Parkinson, who* was proprietor of the Hawera Star. He also referred to Nelson’s oldest paper, the Colonist, whieh had succumbed to the exigencies of the times, and the loss in the councils of the Newspaper Proprietors’ Association of one of the proprietors, Mr. Percy Bond. Mr. Selig offered the congratulations of the association to the Hon. G. J. Anderson, one of the proprietors of the Mataura Ensign on his elevation to the rank of Cabinet Minister. He referred at great length to the news print situation, giving considerable information gathered during his recent travels with respect to the future. Other subjects dealt with were a memorial to those newspaper men and printers who fell" in the war, the paper-making industry, the Press Congress of the World, labor and the awards, the Imperial Press Conference, and the reconstruction of the association. He concluded his address as follows: “Having with this meeting obtained our majority it is fitting that the new organisation should carry on the good work that Kas been done in the past. I lay down office after a term of thirteen successive years in the position of your president, and I hope I can (fittingly apply the words ‘something ! done something achieved.’ ” A unanimous vole of thanks was acSaljgjor addr«i» and. tw
the valuable work done during his lengthy term of office. The chairman here read a telegram from the Prime Minister, who regretted that owing to pressure of work lie could not attend the opening of the conference.
