WAITARA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) February 18. The opening night of the Soldiers’ and Civilians’ Club has been set down for February 28. AJr. W. T. Jennings, M.P., will perform the ceremony. Mr. O. H. Weston, Mr. F. Hartnell, and others, will address the gathering. The proceedings will be enlivened by a musical evening. The popular New Plymouth entertainer, Mr. Hartman, has promised to be present, and the local band are to play selections. The interest in the preparations for the opening night has been considerably quickened during the last few days, and membership tickets have been selling freely. The billiard table, donated to the club by Messrs. T. Borthwick and Sons, has been installed, and is for use. Mr. Proctor has donated a notice board to the local 1 ranch of th# Returned Soldiers Association for use in the club room, and a letter of thanks has been forwarded to that gentleman for the gift. I have mentioned in previous ;;ote.« ; of Waitara’s slowness in making a move j in erecting a memorial to soldiers who I gate their lives in the European war. Other towns and even country places have got their memorials established. The Waitara Borough Council are now being asked by the soldiers themselves (through theijr association) to take > the initial step in the matter and try and arouse interest.
Well done Earl Read and congratulations to his teacher! Master E. Read of Motonui School was successful in gaining his junior free place, at the age of 11 years, at the examination last November, whilst Hannah Edwin has joined the Technical College for a secondary course. At a public, meeting at Tikorangi in connection with the soldiers’ memorial, a credit balance of £24 0s 2d was shown on the undertaking, an< it decided to hand the amowt over to th?. Cemetery Board for maintenance purposes. A committee has been set up to get necessary details and cost of a roll'of honor of soldiers who went away from the Tikorangi district. At the school committee meeting hdd on Mor.’av last the headmaster r«q#ortcd th? attendance at and the roil number as 313. Ext vr.d’vg tooth brush drill to standards 1 and 2 was cswfirmed. As the prospect for a new school is as far'off as ever, the board are to be asked to have the technical room lined before the ‘cold weather ewnes along. This room is used for primaryeducation on account of lack of space in the school proper, and it is obvious that unless the place is lined it will be very cold. The board are to be asked for the artificial heaters as promised.
