PUBLIC BUILDINGS.
NEW PLYMOUTH’S WANTS. HIGH COST PREVENTS WORK. During the visit of the Hon. J. G Coates (Postmaster-General) to Net Plymouth last month, a deputatio* urged the provision of new Government buildings, particularly the erection of a new Customs house. The Minister ha® now written to Mr. S. G. Snjith, M.P./ as follows: “At present the Customs Department] has a three years’ lease of premise® near the railway station, which appar-i ently meets requirements at the present time. Doubtless it would be more econs omical and satisfactory to have the whole of the Government departments housed in one large central building, but owing to the present excessive cost of all building operations, and the necessity for limiting such work to buildings which are absolutely essential, I regret that I do not consider the present an. opportune time to undertake the erection of a large Government building iif New Plymouth. *
