AMERICA’S TARIFF.
CONTROA'ERSY OVER NEW BILL. FATE OF MEASURE UNCERTAIN. By Telegraph.—Press Assn —Copyright. Received Feb. 16, 10.35 p.m. Washington, Feb. 15. The position of the Tariff Bill is becoming anomalous. The Senate passed amendments putting an eight per cent round duty on butter, twelve per cent per dozen on eggs, and twenty-five per cent ad valorum on cheese, but the Opposition Democrats still expect to defeat the measure when it comes to the vote. There is a rumor that twelve Democrats have agreed to join themselves to the Republicans in order to pass the Bill, but Senator Underwood declared that President Wilson will unquestionably veto the measure, even if it passes. The Republicans are now attempting to build up a sufficient majority to pass the Bill. In the event of President Wilson applying a veto, but owing to failure to pass the closure, any Senator can talk the measure to death. The session has hardly more than ten days before it, and must adjourn sine die, so that the fate of the Treasure is uncertain.—Aus.N.Z. Cable Assn.
