When the case against James Patterson, charged with having carried on the business or occupation of book-maker, was called in the Supreme Court today, the Crown Prosecutor applied for an adjournment until Monday next for a fresh jury to be empanelled. “I proposed to stand down,” said counsel, “the whole 24 jurors who served on the Martindale and Livingstone cases and this would only leave 18 jurors on the panel. I can make application to your Honor in view of the fact that the evidence in the case against Martindale and Livingstone was practically uncontradicted. I feel that it should come before a fresh jury.” Mr. O’Leary, for Patterson strongly protested, but Mr. Justice Chapman said; “I shall grant the application. I think it is only right, seeing what happened yesterday. I think the matter should come before a fresh jury panel.” The trial was postponed till Monday. PRISONERS SENTENCED. Wellington, Feb. 15.
