Mr. Clarke, sub-editor of the Auckland Star, is spending his holidays in New Plymouth.
Dr. R. J. Boyd, formerly of Taihape, who has just returned from a visit to England, is settling in Eltham. Lieutenant Matthews, of H.M.S. Chatham, is at present on a holiday visit to Patea.
A cable from Nice says that inquiry at the Hermitage Hotel elicited that Dame Melba’s illness is not now regarded as serious and it is hoped she will soon leave her bedroom. Mr. C. M. Malfroy/ 'of Christchurch, has been officially appointed by the Public Service Commissioner as timber expert officer to the State forest service. Mr. Malfroy was formerly on the West Coast, where he was a successful and prominent sawmiller.
A telegram from Christchurch says Mr. Massey, leaves there to-morrow morning by special train on his long promised visit to the West Coast. He will leave Westport for Nelson overland on Saturday morning, and he leaves Nelson for Wellington on Saturday night. Regarding Saturday’s Dunedin telegram stating that it was understood that Mr. Downie Stewart wdFUld be. the new Minister, Mr. Massey said at Christchurch yesterday: “As a matter of fact T have not yet consulted Cabinet on the subject, and it is a Cabinet matter.”—Press Association.
The resignation of Cr. F. J. Hill from the position of Deputy-Mayor was received at last night’s meeting of the New Plymouth Borough Council, Cr. Hill having been granted leave of absence last week, owing to his projected departure for England. The matter of appointing another councillor to fill the position was deferred till next Monday. Messrs. *F. J Hill and J. Johnson, members of the West End Bowling Club, left, for Wellington by the mail train yesterday to join the New Zealand team of bowlers which is to tour England. Before their departure they were presejited bp members of the West End Club, Mr. Hill with a suitcase and Mr. Johnson with a cabin trunk. Mr. Lobb (president of the dub) made the presentation and expressed the hope that Messrs. Hili and Johnson would have a very enjoyable trip.
The many friends of Mr. Joseph Cobine, a former resident of the Alton and Kakaramea districts, will regret to learn of his death, which took place at the Auckland Hospital on Thursday last (says the Patea Press;. The deceased was for some time a director of the Kakaramea Dairy Co. and was chairman of the Kakaramea School Committee. Some five or six years ago, on account of ill-health, he sold his property at Kakaramea, and removed to the Auckland district, where for a time he benefited in health considerably, but finally succumbed to an internal complaint. The funeral took place on Sunday, at Auckland.
