DAIRYING RESULTS.

The figures recently published relative to the important part played by butter and cheese in the financial position of the Dominion, emphasise the continued prosperity of the dairy industry. The period dealt with only furnishes results up to January 31, so that there are two months’ output to be added in order to cover the full season. It is satisfactory to note that in the six months reviewed there was an increased output over the corresponding period of the previous year of 12,385 tons. The total value of butter and cheese exported in the 191920 season was approximately ten millions and three-quarters, while for the six months of the present season the value is estimated at over eleven millions, so that by the end of the season it should reach about three millions more than in the preceding, year. This gratifying result means much for Taranaki, which is essentially devoted to dairying, and consequently is in a good position to meet the adverse conditions that are obtaining in most parts of the world to-day. It may be that after this season there will be a drop in prices, but not, we are convinced, in any marked degree, for there is always a market at Home for first-class butter and cheese, and the New Zealand article is likely to receive preference over that from foreign countries. Besides, our produce reaches England in the winter, when supplies from other countries are short. Just- now there is reported to be a congestion of butter at Home, but this is a condition that may only be temporary. Production is increasing in Taranaki, as in other dairying ’districts, and the present should be a record one for the province in regard both to prices and quantity.
