BRITISH RAILWAYS.
AN IMPORTANT REPORT. By Telegraph.—Press Assn—Copyright • London, Feb. 11. Mr. Colway’s committee on the railway war-time agreement was amended in the direction of bettering the companies’ bargain, resulting in an almost complete absence of reciprocity. It is believed the companies’ claims are now about 150 millions including arrears of 90 millions for maintenance and 40 millions for abnormal wear and tear. Government control of the railways was continued unjustifiably long.
The committee considers that it is impracticable to hold the companies to the strict terms, but recommends the disallowance of the maintenance charges above the 1913 quantum and that the companies should be compelled to use the previous payments to overtake the deferred work before further payments Rte made.—-Aus.-N.Z.
