Monday was the 58th anniversary of the wreck of H.M.S. Orpheus, a new corvette of 2'l guns, on the Manukau Bar, while on the point of completing a rim from Sydney to Onehunga. The disaster, one" of the most tragic in the history of wrecks in New Zealand waters, occurred in broad delight, on the afternoon of Saturday, February 7, 1863, the cause being the taking of a shallow channel in mistake for the proper course. The commander of the vessel, Commodore Burnett, and 180 other members of the ship’s company, were drowned. The survivors, 75 in number, were picked up by boats from the steamer Wonga Wonga. The bodies that were recovered were interred in the Symonds Street cemetery. Souvenirs made from a portion. of the wreckage of the Orpheus were presented to Lord Jeliicoe on the occasion of his visit to Auckland in 1819.
