MARANATHA. MARANATHA. Signs of Christ’s coming.—the CHURCH SIGN. “POR the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God; for it is written He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.” 1 Cor. iii.: 19. W’e never observed a better exemplification cf the truth of this Scripture than some years ago .when in a city which shall be nameless we listened to a preacher of a church which boasted that its congregation contained the most highly educated people iin thaY community. The preacher was I indeed a very popular man, and had ob- ' tained a high degree from a German uni- ; versity, if we remember aright. Explaining chiefly the disbeliefs of this heterodox pulpit, he said, “We don’t believe that Jonah was swallowed by a. whale.” which there was quite an audible smile in the church. A distinguished British scientSt, leading a party of explorers in search of the ruins of Ninei veh, was utterly baffled until the Arab guides pointed out a spot which they said was known as “Jonah’s Mound,” and regarding which 4here were local traditions connected with the Hebrew prophet. TJhe explorer, regarding this as a clue, began to dig in the vicinity, with the result that the site of the ancient city of Nineveh was discovered. This scientist ever after was confirmed in his belief that the story of Jonah was founded upon fact. But we feel very sorry for the preacher and congregation, composed as it was of university professors and ‘literary men, when he remarked, with evident approval from his hearers, that the church did not believe in prayer. Were they not willingly ignorant of the mighty results from prayer which are recorded of George Muiler, Spurgeon, Hudson Taylor, Pundita Ramabai, and other men and women who had and have power with God? The remarkable answer which God gave to George Muller’s prayer, which was told against himself by the captain of the big Atlantic liner when a dense Newfoundland fog was instantly cleared, is well known. Not so wellknown is the story connected with Pundita Ramabai. All the wells around Kedgaon (Bombay) were drying ‘up during a prolonged Indian drought. The heathen Hindus asked Ramabai, “What will you do when your well dries up?” Ramabai replied: “I am glad that you have put this question. I shall ask God that the well shall not dry up. You take notice of the result. I shal ask not only that there shall be water sufficient for our drinking and washing needs, but that I may have enough to water my plants.” To the astonishment of the Hindus the well gave all that was asked for, till the rains fell. The Church of God could have great power in prayer if it only belfeved, but our Lord, speaking of this day, said, “And I if I come again shall I find faith in the earth?”
