(By "Moturoa.”) Te Kuiti Cup to-day. Concluding day at Dunedin. The Woodville meeting opens on Wednesday. Weights for Wanganui are due on Monday. It is hoped that Gloaming did not strain himself in the Hawera Stakes! Tlnopai, who I: as won five Te Kuiti Cups, is an acceptor in to-day’s race. Kipling, who was very erratic on the flat, looks like proving a paying proposition over the sticks. On his running in the Egunont Cup Landslide looked a moral for the Atkinson Memorial, but he did not have much to spare at the finish. It is just a toss up which is the more unlucky, Stork or Quiniro. Both are generally in a place, but never seem to be quite good enough. Those who noticed Rude finishing in the Egmont Cup will be on the Fordell horse at Wanganui. Marqueteur is another that will show up in his River City engagements. Starland's poor form at Hawera was inexplicable, and he let a whole army of backers down with a thufl. Surely this is not the crackerjack that won the Auckland and Takapuna Cups? i Acre seems to have lost his punch entirely. Ho looks well enough, and has had a fair amount of racing, but his exhibitions are dull and dispiriting—especially to his backers.

Vespucci is serving the useful purpose of preventing a walk over with the champion, Gloaming, but for all the use he is to Gloaming otherwise he might have been left in his box and thus save the racing clubs 50 per cent, of their stakes. Mr. A. Alexander is to be commended for producing his consistent mare, Silver Link, in order to make Gloaming gallop, and thus provide the public with a decent race, and the public owe him a debt of thanks for his sportsmanship. Many and ludicrous were the schemes suggested by facetious sports at Hawera to bi*hg Gloaming back to his opponents. One suggested giving Greenwood first prize, but Gloaming’s opponents were to be presented with a furlong start. Another suggested borrowing a light-weight sulky from H. Barraclough, and harnessing Gloaming to it. All cf which is amusing, to say the least of it. Chatting with “J B.” Gaisford at Hawera, writer learned that the veteran Mattock is still going strong, though now up in years, possibly twelve. Mattock, "J.JJ.” proudly states, has won a flat race, a hurdle race, a steeplechase, and a maiden show ring jumping event (owner up) this season, and his owner reckons that he will “trot” anything that he has met in all four classes for two miles foe any amount 1 A useful horse is Mattock! A lot of people who had got the idea that Inah runs her best races in the spring had reason to alter their opinion after the Hawera meeting. She was produced in her best condition by IV. Pine, and ran two magnificent races. Rockfleld promises to be strongly fancied in the Te Kuiti Cup this afternoon, and Esthonia, Jaffna, Lady Lyddite, Penona, and Fallwin will carry big money in their en-' gagements. With Amythas spelling and Arrowsmith a temporary wreck, this season’s remaining classic events appear to be benefits for Gloaming Armorel’s Juvenile Handicap at Hawera was very popular, and with ordinary luck she should win more races for Mr. Joll before the season is over. The Hawera sportsman has gone in for high-priced "cattle,” and deserves all the success that comes his way. Big fields will be the order of the day at Woodville on Wednesday. Amongst the likely runners are fit horses like Punka, Early Dawn, Hautawa, Backsheesh', Strategy, Yankee Dan, and Passenger. Eleus appears to have been* given a chance in the Dunedin J.C. Handicap to-day with 9.9, and Dutch Courage, Tatau Tatau, Royal Stag, and Silver Peak are -Well placed in their races. OPUNAKE RACES. For the convenience of horse-owners and trainers taking horses to the Opunake races, nominations for which close on February 24, the Opunake Racing Club has arranged to provide 50 beds handy to the course. Arrangements have also been made for a caterer to attend and put on meals two or three days before the races. An additional twelve boxes have also been provided, giving accomodation for thirty horses, whilst there is also paddocking for twenty more. This, no doubt, will be greatly appreciated by owners, and trainers, and the nominations should be improved thereby.

The Rangitlkei Racing Club has issued the programme for its annual two-day race meeting, to be held on March 22nd and 23rd at the old-establisSied Bulls racecourse.
