HAWTHORN HEDGES.
COMPLAINTS BY ORCHARDISTS. CONTROL ASKED FO£. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. At a meeting of orchardists and others interested the question of legislation at the forthcoming short session was considered. Alternative suggestions were that hawthorn be declared a noxious weed, or brought under control throughout the Dominion by hedges being kept to a height of five feet. After several alternatives had been discussed it was decided that the executive of the Central Fireblight Association be constituted a Parliamentary committee to arrange for the necessary legislation. It was also decided that, a feeling exists in the minds of orchardists that the Government will not take action for the destruction and control of all infected hawthorn, whether in commercial fruit-growing areas or dairying districts, because the fruit-growing industry is not considered sufficiently important to warrant interference with such hawthorn shelter in dairying land.
