SOUTH AFRICAN ELECTIONS.
RESULT OF FIRST RETURNS. By Telegraph.—Press Assn —Copyright. Received Feb. 9, 5.5 p.m. Capetown, Feb. 9. Last night’s election returns indicated that the South African Party has secured thirty-nine seats, Labor eight, Nationalists six. and Independent one, the South African Party’s gains being fourteen, Labor two, and Nationalists three. The Nationalists’ gains include the defeat of Minister Debit and Colonel Preitz by narrow majorities. Labor’s losses include two leaders, Messrs. Cresswell and Kentridge, the latter’s seat going to a Nationalist. Mr Cresswell’s defeat came as a great surprise. Returns so far received from urban districts provide indications of how the country voting will go. It is anticipated General Smuts the Premier) will secure a good working majority. —Aus.N.Z. Cable Assn. ELECTION PROSPECTS. GOVERNMENT PROSPECTS HOPEFUL. Capetown, Feb. 8. The elections are proceeding. Mr. Cresswell, Labor leader, has been defeated by the Government candidate. General Smuts has been elected in Pretoria West by a big majority. So far the Government has gained nine seats from Labor. The polling is generail/ heavy.
